The Cooper family has been closely associated with Henley since the 18th Century. The firm can trace its origins to 1741 when Thomas Newell first practised in the town as an attorney.

From 1777 to 1914 five Coopers successively held the office of Town Clerk and, in 1838, John Cooper and Charles Towsey conceived the idea of an annual regatta in Henley, which then developed into the Henley Royal Regatta. John Cooper was cox of the Wave Crew which won the Town Cup at the first regatta in 1839.
